Understanding Dog First Aid Is Way More Than Merely Having A First Aid Kit
You certainly have heard the well-known saying that "Curiosity killed the cat." But dogs are just as bad since they are certainly inquisitive and are often in the habit of going places and getting into situations that they shouldn't. While this doesn't always end badly, they often will end up hurting themselves by some means so it's a good option to be aware of some dog first aid.
Around the time my Lhasa Apso was three or four months old she succeeded in finding a previously unknown patch of burrs in the backyard and made up her mind to play in it for awhile. By the time she came back to the house the burrs had worked themselves firmly into spots on her face, her ears and her little behind.
It was late so the Vet was already closed and a visit to the animal hospital would likely have been very expensive. So she was subjected to my tearful yet laughing efforts as I managed to one by one work those burrs out of her hair as she struggled and yelped for more than two hours. They were matted so seriously and right next to the skin that cutting them out was not a possibility.
A tranquilizer of some sort would have been ideal but I didn't have anything for her. And since there was no blood or critical injury, visiting the emergency hospital was a choice ... that time.
That is a saddening yet amusing story to share and hopefully an experience she has forgotten over time. It was also a minor thing although very painful and aggravating for both of us. But it might have been more serious.
As a conscientious pet owner you really need to know at least basic first aid for dogs so you can be prepared for more life-threatening emergencies. You can often save on Vet expenses for smaller problems like the one I had. But you might also need to be able to help minimize your canine's pain or provide life-saving actions until you can get to the Vet.
Having a dog first aid kit is positively a good thing but you also need to know what to do in a true emergency. Always keep phone numbers close by for both your regular Vet as well as the local animal emergency hospital. And be sure to learn basic canine first aid yourself.
I've never needed to provide life-saving medical actions for my canine and maybe you haven't had to either. But would you know what exactly to do if faced with a life-threatening situation connected with your four-legged friend?
